8 Outdoor Adventures to Enjoy Around Goodland Before Summer Turns Up the Heat

Published April 29, 2025

There’s a sweet spot in Texas weather. A few beautiful weeks between “sweater weather” and “scorching sidewalk” – and we’re smack in the middle of it. Before the triple digits come knocking, it’s time to soak up every second of sunshine.

Luckily, living at Goodland puts you right in the heart of outdoor adventure, with nature parks, trails and wide-open spaces close to home. Whether you’re looking for family-friendly spring activities near Dallas or dreaming of outdoor activities in Grand Prairie, TX, to enjoy solo, we’ve rounded up a few favorite ways to stretch your legs (and your smile) before summer sizzles in.

1. Make Waves at Joe Pool Lake

Living near Joe Pool Lake means you’ve got a water wonderland practically in your backyard. Fishing, kayaking, jet skiing, bird watching, camping – you name it, you can do it here. Joe Pool Lake is a local favorite with 7,500 acres of sparkling water and plenty of shoreline to explore. Whether you’re setting sail or setting up a BBQ picnic, it’s the perfect launchpad for a sunny day outside.

2. Hit the Trails at Cedar Hill State Park

Things to do in Grand Prairie this spring? A day at Cedar Hill State Park should top your list. Right on the shores of Joe Pool Lake, this 1,800-acre gem has hiking and biking trails, campsites, playgrounds and picnic spots galore. Bonus: It feels like a world away, even though it’s just a short drive from Goodland. Bring the family, bring the dog, bring the sunscreen.

3. Pedal Power on the DORBA Trail

If you’re ready for some two-wheeled thrills, the DORBA Trail at Cedar Hill is calling. Created and maintained by the Dallas Off Road Biking Association, this 12-mile network weaves through limestone hills and native prairie. It’s open to hikers too, just be sure to bring plenty of water, a good pair of shoes and a spirit for adventure.

4. Hike and Unwind at Cedar Ridge Preserve

Craving a little quiet? Cedar Ridge Preserve offers over 600 acres of native habitat and miles of trails – no playgrounds, no sports fields, just pure, unfiltered nature. It’s a place where you can lace up your hiking boots, listen to the wind in the trees and maybe spot a hawk or two soaring overhead. (Pro tip: Early mornings here are pure magic.)

5. Play Big at Katherine Rose Memorial Park

This local favorite is getting a major glow-up, with upgrades underway to make it even more remarkable. The new and improved Katherine Rose Memorial Park will feature an inclusive playground, story walk trail, new pavilions and courts for basketball, sand volleyball, tennis and pickleball. It’s a true “something for everyone” spot, and it’ll be even better once the renovations are complete.

6. Stroll Through Wildflowers at Mockingbird Nature Park

Located in nearby Midlothian, Mockingbird Nature Park is a peaceful, scenic spot perfect for a springtime walk. Trails wind through native wildflowers and open prairie land, and April and May are peak bloom season. It’s a quiet little getaway where you and the family can stretch your legs and take in some of Texas’s natural beauty.

7. Cruise the Walnut Creek Linear Trail

Prefer your outdoor adventures a little more paved and shady? Walnut Creek Linear Trail in Mansfield is an easy favorite. This scenic trail meanders along the creek, connecting several parks and offering plenty of spots to pause, picnic or simply enjoy the view. It’s great for walkers, runners, bikers and families with strollers in tow.

8. Stroll, Explore and Relax at Goodland

And of course, you don’t even have to leave the neighborhood to get your daily dose of fresh air. Goodland is designed for outdoor living, with trails, open spaces, creeks and parks built right into the community.

Even more to look forward to in 2026: The Retreat, Goodland’s signature gathering space, will open with brand-new places to play, work out, fish and kick back under the big Texas sky. And additions to The Hangout will bring even more fun to the mix. (Pickleball Barn? Yes, please.)

So before the heat cranks up, grab your water bottle, lace up those sneakers and get outside. There’s a whole lot of Texas beauty waiting just around the corner. And at Goodland, the great outdoors is always part of the story.
